Albert James "Al" Schmidt, age 78, of Clarkson, peacefully departed from this world on August 22, 2026, at Norton Hospital in Louisville. Born on October 4, 1947, in The Bronx, New York, Al was the beloved son of the late James and Grace Foppiano Schmidt.

Al was not just a bus driver for the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority in New York; he was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a Volunteer Fireman for many years, embodying the spirit of honor and duty. He had a heart full of love and laughter, sharing his life with those he cherished. Those who knew him will fondly remember Al for his joy of singing, his affinity for playing on his tablet, and his passion for watching sports and old movies.

He leaves behind a loving family who will continue to celebrate his legacy. He is survived by his life partner, Saundra Pierce Gutierez; his three children, Michael Schmidt (Betsy), Janet Hovestadt (Michael), and James Schmidt (Nichole); his sister, Theresa "Terry" Richter; his brother, Steve Schmidt; and his ten adoring grandchildren.

In accordance with Al's wishes, he will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date, where family and friends will gather to remember and honor this wonderful man. Details regarding the ceremony will be shared soon, and all are encouraged to come and share their memories.

Al touched many lives, and we will carry his spirit with us always. For those wishing to express their condolences, please visit www.leitchfieldfh.com.
